Ongoing series of abstract drawings in response to our conditioned existence within multiple deep-rooted networks maintaining systems of oppression.
Reading Paulo Freire’s ‘Pedagogy of the Oppressed’ is highly influential here, especially his writing about how these systems enable our oppressor to be hosted comfortably within the oppressed. Kind of dormant. Yet ready to boldly appear in our actions and words when threatened by any disobedience to perpetuating the status quo.
Becoming conscious of this is horrific. Agonising. I’m curious about facing this awareness while tapping into the intelligence of our ancient fire of feelings to resist – despite the frequent perception of screaming into a vacuum. Words alone are inadequate. I think about John Carpenter’s film ‘They Live’ often… but also Ece Temelkuran’s empowering take on having faith in humanity in her excellent book ‘Together’.
Powerful love and respect for all who have gone before and those who will come after in this infinite collective cause for humanity and liberation.
